For many years Nikon produced perhaps one of the finest underwater 35mm cameras ever made called the Nikonos. This camera could be found in the hands of top underwater photographers across the globe. Sadly to the dismay of many professional underwater photographers the camera was discontinued. Despite being discontinued you can still find many of these cameras on the used market for very reasonable prices. In fact if you go to KEH.com you can find a used nikonos for as little as $179 (minus the lens).
Anyhow if you are serious about underwater photography take a look at one of these cameras.

You have lots of choices:
- Almost all Canon digital cameras have an underwater housing
- Olympus has a waterproof (and shockproof, crushproof and freezeproof) digital camera and hence does not require an underwater housing (though there is one for deeper and longer underwater excursions)
- Fujifilm, Nikon, Sony also have some models with underwater housing
It can be very hard to get good underwater pictures. As always, good lighting is important and the camera’s on board flash might sometimes be too weak to do a good job underwater. So, unless you are swimming in crystal clear waters in a sunny region, don’t just look for an underwater housing, also research underwater flash attachment. Have fun!
